Far too often, religion has been a source of pain and conflict in human history–and in our own lives, too. Not to recognize that would be bearing false witness. But religion doesn’t need to be that way. Here, at Community United Church, we believe that an authentic faith community does well when we come as we are, name our questions, and seek our answers through dialogue, wrestling with tradition, and choosing to be open to new insights.
We find ourselves “searching and knocking” and loving our neighbors as people who follow the teachings of Christ. As we do, we have become a people who see that the Gospel commandment of love–and the vision of the Reign of God–draws the circle of God’s grace ever wider, and, expands our commitments to social justice and peace.
Community United Church celebrates diversity as an Open and Affirming Christian congregation. Our respect for diversity leads us to stand for social justice when the powers that be marginalize or oppress anyone.
As a faith tradition, we understand the scriptures’ to reveal that God is unconditional love; Christ as the embodiment of God’s Word and Wisdom, and the Holy Spirit as God’s eternal power and presence made known to us as our eternal advocate and friend.
The only thing we leave at the door, and at the cross, are the sins of prejudice, hatred, domination, righteousness, abuse, and alienation. Our inclusive community is defined by including all that reveals unconditional love and stands for restorative justice.
We believe the grace of God covers all. We believe Christ shows us what divine love looks like in human life, death, and resurrection. We believe the power of the Spirit is empowerment and the strengthening of communities in love, justice, and peace.
Now, more than ever, we need such faith communities to rise, to be visible, and to be loud with the ways of transformative love. Join us!
